Recently, at a press conference while promoting his upcoming movie Baby John, Varun Dhawan explained why Theri director Atlee brought the project to him, acknowledging changes in its geography and storyline.
Speaking about the adaptation, Dhawan said, “Like, you see, a lot of the frames and a lot of the story angles are different. So, if someone comes in expecting a book-by-book remake, they will be disappointed because that’s not what the film is. It’s an adaptation. We’re not running away from that, but it’s more of an adaptation.”
Dhawan further emphasized the fresh perspective the movie offers, including a modern take on parenting, and a focus on women’s safety in India. He revealed that the movie incorporates a “big case” inspired by real-life events, and his character has been modified to suit this narrative approach.
Theri, the Tamil original, was released in 2016, starring Thalapathy Vijay and directed by Atlee Kumar. Featuring Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson in key roles, it became a major success. Now, Baby John brings a fresh spin to the story, with a stellar cast, including Wamiqa Gabbi, Keerthy Suresh, Jackie Shroff, and Rajpal Yadav. The movie also promises special appearances by Salman Khan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Sanya Malhotra, further elevating the excitement.

The Baby John trailer teases a heartfelt yet intense story, focusing on the bond between Dhawan’s character and his daughter. He is portrayed as a devoted father who balances parenting with his duties as a police officer. His daughter humorously tells him that just because she calls him “baby” doesn’t mean he is one.
The trailer also offers glimpses of romance with Keerthy Suresh, and appearances by Sanya Malhotra and Wamiqa Gabbi. Jackie Shroff, the antagonist, steals the spotlight with his intimidating performance. The trailer concludes with Dhawan’s character unleashing his fury to protect his daughter at any cost.
